ABOUT US

Tomy Takkies is an iconic South African brand creating accessible, affordable and fashion-forward footwear

Our story began in 1964 in Bata’s first production factory in Zimbabwe. Hard shoes were not working for our local market because of the dry climate and hard ground. The founding father of Bata developed a softer, canvas shoe and aptly named it after his son Tomy George Bata.

Our story began in 1964 in Bata’s first production factory in Zimbabwe. Hard shoes were not working for our local market because of the dry climate and hard ground. The founding father of Bata developed a softer, canvas shoe and aptly named it after his son Tomy George Bata.

The impact a small, unknown brand would come to have on street culture and fashion in South Africa surpassed expectation. It was only a matter of time before the Tomy Originals became a classic. It spread like a fashion wildfire and our brand soon provided an identity for students, sportsman, school children, rebels, artists, your next door neighbour and everyone in between – it’s the classic, timeless look that shaped our brand early on that has South Africans wearing them with pride.

Tomy is the start of a journey. You put on your Tomy’s and get going with your day. It’s the founding ingredient you need to conquer and reach your goals. To get your look on point you need to be looking and feeling great from the feet up. The brand’s simple and easy to style aesthetics have made it easy for you to do just that. When you rock your Tomys, you open your world to new possibilities.

The brand is entrenched deeply in the streets and the hearts of South Africans everywhere. We created them for casual weekend wear – you saw them as something more. You took them and made them your own. They went from weekend wear to everyday wear and soon they were darting up and down every major street in the country. Being tossed around in circles by street dancers and stomped around on dancefloors. The Tomy stamp had made its mark on every trendsetter, every hungry youth searching for something more than what they were handed. It became hard to miss them because they seemed to attract the greatest variety of users and self-proclaimed advocates.

Tomy is the canvas and the person wearing them is the artist that gets to fill them with as much colour and possibility as they can. Fast forward to today and the Tomy spirit lives on with every pair of shoes made. The moment you put them on your feet and start doing your thing, is when they truly come alive. We make them but you’ve made them.
